Day 53-Cactus and Snow

In the morning Portrait and I had more road to walk before the trail joined up with the road for a bit.  Then a sharp left turn brought us to Medicine Bow National Forest.  Slowly the Basin gave way to the mountains and the trees.
The mountains along the trail are pitted with old cabins--life before the land was made into National Forest.
More trees and the snowy peaks that we had to cross before reaching the town of Encampment.
Just a friendly reminded that we were still in the desert

Patchy snow started covering the trail about a mile ago.  The patches of bare ground grew smaller as we hiked higher.  At 10,000 feet we could no longer avoid the snow.  It was time to get the feet wet.  We didn't make it far once we were in the snow.  We stopped early hoping the snow would firm up during the night and hiking would be easier.

  1. I would have to resist the temptation to fix up one of those old cabins and stay there.
